What is the procedure?

The first visit to your occularist is usually two weks after the operation. According to the swelling you will either be given a provisorial prosthesis which will prepare the socket for the final form. This is neccesary when:
  1. though further decrease of swelling of the tissue the way the prosthesis fits will be changed. A final prosthesis is too early.
  2. no conformer was set during the operation
or
the final prostesis can be fitted directly. The eye socket is measured by a model prosthesis at first. Through consultation with you the ocularist can determine how the final form must be shaped through the volume, movement and position. The eye will be manufactured in your presence and tried out. This takes approx. 2 hours and in done in one sitting.

How often does the prosthesis need to me replaced?

It is recomended to replace the prosthesis once a year, because the alcalic tear fluid destroys the surface. This leads to an increased production of tear fluid and secretion. Because the eyelids slide over the prosthesis thousands of times per day, iritations of the sensitive eyelid edges can arise. Often the fitting of the prosthesis was changes so much that

Will I feel the prosthesis?

A prosthesis is a foreign body and you will we aware of it in the beginning. This feeling usually disappears after a few days, sometimes even hours.

Will anybody see that I wear an eye prosthesis?

The possibilities open to the ocularist are determined through the condition of the eye socket. On the whole it will not be very obvious. You can express your wishes at any time. Together with operating doctors, therapy concepts can be developed.

Must I remove the prosthesis at night?

Usually the prosthesis can and should be worn aduring the night. Only in special cases it may be advisible to remove it at night.

Can I do sport with my prosthesis?

Yes. But you should remember that you only have one eye left which needs special protection. So wear protective glasses, best at all times.

You shouln´t do highboard diving, as enormous water pressure can pull the prosthesis out of the socket.

Can I go diving with my prosthesis?

According to the type of prosthesis (hollow body/ single walled shell) your artificial glass eye will only tolerate water pressure to the depth of 20m. Should it break whilst diving one could panic. Hobby divers should have a plastic eye made for this purpose or do without it whilst diving.

Can my artificial eye fall out?

Artificial eyas are held in the socket the pressure of the eyelids also through adhesion. You can control this by pullind down the lower eyelid.
